cake for a sister

I got conned by my own mother.

I’ve been excited for the past month to be making the birthday cake for my oldest sister Ashley, and at the last moment, mum asked me to make a second little cake so that she could take to a friend of hers.

I sat there making the peony flowers out of gumpaste & choosing the prettiest of the two in order to put the superior one on Ash’s cake, and then asked my mum who the second cake was for.

Apparently it was for some teenage boy…. I had just put a giant flower on a boys cake! Still, it was a gift & a favor to mum so I didn’t bother arguing the apparent design flaw.

Later I caught mum taking the second cake upstairs, & confused, I asked her where she was going with it…. She was off to show my other sister Amyra… well according to her any way. Again, a little confused, I just let it slide even though subconsciously I knew Amyra had already seen the better & larger version of what was practically an identical cake.

Yeah, right. What an idiot I can be sometimes.

We started singing happy birthday for Ash in the middle of the party, & then mum produced the second of the two cakes. Seems she and my sisters were all in on it. Since I’d been half way around the world for my birthday, they decided to join mine & Ashley’s together today since we’re both on the 19th.

They conned me.

Still, I have three gorgeous sisters who will lay on the floor laughing hysterically with me for hours on end, it doesn’t really get much better than that.

Ashley my darling, thank you for being my biggest big sister. I love you with all of my heart, happy birthday, bunny.

The cake recipe is the same used in this recipe for the chocolate cake with orange buttercream except I substituted the yogurt for butter, & the chocolate ganache recipe comes from my chestnut cupcakes from last Christmas, I just did four times the quantity in order to ensure the cake was covered.

If anyone is interested in learning how to make the peony flower, I can set up a step by step post for that if enough request it.
